The plot obviously has more ins and outs than just a moral choice. Glimpsing into the future, Danny Phantom has become evil, and must be stopped at all costs. Danny must fight peer pressure, as well as a variety of ghosts in order to ensure that the future doesn’t turn out like his vision.

Fighting spirit

General gameplay in The Ultimate Enemy is pretty standard beat ‘em up fare. You move the titular character from left to right, defeating all of the enemies in a set area before moving further to the right. Some items and objectives are thrown in for variety in these segments too, but the game has nothing on the arcade beat ‘em ups of yesteryear - it’s no Alien Storm or The Punisher. It looks the part, but just fails to feel up to the mark.

Bump in the night

The ghostly enemies are reasonably varied, there are three or four main types of apparition that Danny will take on throughout the game. Larger enemies stick to the ground, but others fly at a jump height above the player. Killing these enemies requires jumping and hitting them three times in a row – and with everything else going on beneath, it’s just a bit of a pain to have to repeatedly do this, especially as these enemies are so common.

Short, not sweet

Each mission in the game takes between 20 and 90 seconds, and it’s just not enough. As soon as you start to gain momentum and begin to enjoy yourself the mission ends, leading you to dialogue sections that completely remove you from the action and detract from your immersion. Individual missions should have at least been a couple of minutes longer, but on the other hand it’s almost a saving grace that you’re never experiencing the combat for that long. The Ultimate Enemy feels like more of a cheaply-made cash grab than a real thought-out video game. Plot-wise, it’s nothing new – it’s just a retelling of an episode of the cartoon series. Gameplay-wise, the game is incredibly mediocre, combat isn’t particularly fun and the majority of enemies don’t present much of a challenge. Individual levels are too short and boss battles are uninspired and boring. Even for fans of the series, there is nothing here to make playing the game worthwhile.
